Documentary Film Poster
This documentary explores the rent strikes that took place in the 1970s. Most of the photos available were extremely grainy and hard to make out so I opted for a different approach.
I chose to illustrate one particular pivotal point – the symbolic burning of rent notices on the balcony of Dublin City Hall in 1972. I condensed this event into a single smouldering eviction notice falling through the air.
The shadow of a police officer adds tension, implying the clashes with authority to come. The green, white and hint of orange in the flame position the rebellion in an Irish context, while the blocky utilitarian shapes of the film title evoke artwork of the leftwing movement.
